TV Reporter, Cameraman Arrested for Filming Iranian Ship
Two media persons and a boat driver arrested in Kerala for allegedly trespassing into Cochin Port’s high-security zone and recording videos of an Iranian ship.
A television reporter, a cameraman, and a speedboat driver were arrested on Saturday for allegedly trespassing into a high-security zone of Cochin Port harbour in Kerala and filming an Iranian vessel anchored there, police officials said.
According to the police, the journalists allegedly entered a restricted area of the harbour and captured photographs and videos of the Iranian ship using a speedboat. The vessel had docked at the port following a diplomatic decision by the Government of India for life-saving purposes, authorities added.
Based on information received about the alleged breach, the Harbour Police registered a case and took the three individuals into custody. The arrested persons include a reporter from a prominent television news channel, the channel’s cameraman, and the driver of the speedboat used to approach the vessel.
Police officials said the area where the vessel was anchored falls within a high-security zone, where entry without authorisation is strictly prohibited due to security concerns related to maritime infrastructure and sensitive international shipping.
Authorities are currently investigating how the individuals gained access to the restricted area and whether proper permissions had been obtained before approaching the vessel.
The incident has once again highlighted the legal boundaries journalists must navigate while reporting from sensitive or restricted zones, particularly locations designated as critical infrastructure or high-security areas.
Further details regarding the charges and legal provisions invoked are expected as the investigation progresses.
