CCTV Issues in Police Stations to Be Fixed in 2 Weeks: Centre
The Central Government assures the Supreme Court that all issues related to CCTV installation in police stations will be resolved within two weeks, emphasizing accountability and transparency.
The Central Government has assured the Supreme Court that all pending issues related to the installation and proper functioning of CCTV cameras in police stations across the country will be resolved within the next two weeks.
During the hearing on Tuesday, Attorney General R. Venkataramani informed the apex court that he is personally reviewing the entire matter and that work is progressing swiftly at multiple levels. Earlier, on April 6, a bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta had directed the Union Home Secretary to remain personally present in court to provide necessary assistance regarding the implementation of the CCTV installation scheme in police stations. In compliance with the order, the Home Secretary appeared before the court on Tuesday.
During the proceedings, the Attorney General assured the court that all pending issues would be resolved within two weeks through regular meetings. He added that continuous coordination would be maintained with the amicus curiae appointed by the court and other concerned officials to ensure there is no delay at any level and that the system is implemented effectively.
The matter is being heard by the Supreme Court under its suo motu jurisdiction regarding the lack of functional CCTV cameras in police stations. The court has previously made it clear that CCTV cameras in police stations are not merely a formality but are crucial for ensuring transparency, accountability, and the protection of human rights. This system is considered essential for monitoring custodial situations, interrogation processes, and police actions.
Taking the Centre’s assurance on record, the court has scheduled the next hearing for April 28.
