Jaipur, June 1: At least six villagers were injured after unidentified assailants allegedly opened fire and pelted stones at residents protesting against alleged illegal mining in Rajasthan's Ajitpura-Kujeta area on Monday, police said.
The attack occurred when villagers resumed their agitation, which has now entered its 300th day. According to police, several injured persons suffered bullet wounds and were taken to the government BDM Hospital in Kotputli. Two critically injured individuals were later referred to Jaipur for advanced medical treatment.
Superintendent of Police Satveer Singh said special teams have been constituted to identify and arrest those responsible for the violence.
"The incident is serious, and those involved will not be spared. Raids are underway to apprehend the accused," Singh said.
Following the attack, tensions escalated in the area, prompting authorities to deploy additional police personnel to maintain law and order.
Officials said villagers have been protesting for months against mining activities in the region. The protest site had been cleared by the administration with police assistance on May 29, but residents gathered again on Monday, when the attack took place.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, villagers alleged that despite repeated complaints regarding illegal mining, blasting activities and the movement of overloaded vehicles, authorities failed to address their concerns.
Residents further claimed that the mining operations are being carried out by a mining mafia enjoying political patronage. They also alleged that individuals linked to the mining lobby had previously threatened and harassed protesters.
