Cash recovery row: Judges Inquiry Panel submits findings on Justice Varma
Judges Inquiry Committee has submitted its report in the Justice Yashwant Varma cash recovery case linked to alleged unaccounted money found at his residence, amid ongoing impeachment proceedings against him.
The Judges Inquiry Committee probing allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma, who was facing impeachment proceedings over the alleged discovery of unaccounted cash at his official residence, has submitted its report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Officials said the report was submitted on Monday in compliance with statutory requirements under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968.
The report is expected to be placed before both Houses of Parliament during the upcoming session. Parliament is likely to convene for its monsoon session in the third week of July.
The three-member committee was constituted by the Speaker on August 12, 2025, after impeachment proceedings gained momentum in Parliament. Over 200 Members of Parliament had signed a motion seeking the removal of Justice Varma.
The allegations against him stem from a fire incident at his official residence on the night of March 14, 2025, during which firefighters reportedly discovered large amounts of burnt currency in a storeroom at the Delhi bungalow.
An in-house inquiry earlier constituted by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna had concluded that Justice Varma had “active or tacit control” over the storeroom where the cash was allegedly found.
Following the allegations, impeachment proceedings were initiated in Parliament, and the inquiry committee was tasked with examining the charges in detail.
However, amid the proceedings, Justice Varma resigned from his position as a judge of the Allahabad High Court. Legal experts noted that once a judge tenders resignation to the President and circulates it publicly, it is considered effective, and does not require formal acceptance.
Despite his resignation, the inquiry committee continued its work, as it was constituted while he was still serving as a judge. Experts said the resignation does not impact the validity of the committee’s proceedings.
Officials further clarified that while Justice Varma’s name may still appear in official listings, he is now considered a former judge and private citizen.
Once the committee’s report is tabled in Parliament, it will be for the House to decide on the next course of action.
