Delhi High Court Restores Cockroach Janta Party's X Account, But Does Not Rule on Legality of Blocking Order
The Delhi High Court ordered the restoration of the Cockroach Janta Party's X account after the Centre withdrew its blocking order, leaving the legality of the original ban undecided.
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court on Tuesday directed the restoration of the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) X account after the Union Government informed the Court that it had withdrawn the blocking order issued against the handle in May.
Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma passed the order while hearing a petition filed by CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke challenging the Centre's decision to withhold the social media account.
Appearing for the Centre, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted that the X handle had been blocked to prevent potential "chaos" among students and parents ahead of the NEET-UG 2026 re-test conducted on June 21. He told the Court that with the examination process now complete, the primary concern that prompted the blocking order no longer survived.
Accepting the submission, the Court observed, "Since NEET is already over, the primary concern is no longer of any relevance. In these circumstances, the order is revoked. The petition is allowed."
The original CJP account was withheld in India on May 21, shortly after the group emerged as a satirical digital movement following controversy surrounding remarks made by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant. During the suspension, the organisation continued its online campaign through a new account, "Cockroach is Back," which has attracted more than 2.27 lakh followers.
The proceedings concluded without the High Court examining the legality or constitutional validity of the original blocking order. Instead, the petition was disposed of after the Centre withdrew its decision, leaving broader questions relating to executive powers to block social media accounts and the constitutional limits on restrictions affecting online speech open for future judicial consideration.
The CJP has described itself as a youth-led movement seeking greater accountability in the education sector. It has been campaigning over the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak and demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged systemic failures in the conduct of the examination.
This format is suitable for a legal news portal: a compelling explanatory headline, a factual subheading, and a body that clearly distinguishes between what the Court decided and what legal questions remain unresolved.
