BAI Moves Delhi High Court Against Viral Misinformation on Judges' London Badminton Trip

The Badminton Association of India (BAI) on Friday approached the Delhi High Court seeking directions to curb the spread of "false" claims that several Indian judges and Union ministers had participated in a government-funded badminton tournament in London, allegedly at taxpayers' expense.

The plea was mentioned for urgent listing before the vacation bench of Justice Tejas Karia. Appearing on advance notice, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta also pressed for an expedited hearing, telling the court that despite a fact-check refuting the claims, the misinformation continued to spread and was damaging the judiciary's reputation.

Justice Karia agreed to list the matter for the same day, subject to removal of defects in the filing by 2:30 PM.

BAI's petition seeks immediate takedown of the "malicious posts" from social media and news platforms, citing reputational harm to both the judiciary and the sporting body.

The dispute traces back to viral posts claiming that around 75 Indian judges, along with Union ministers, travelled to London for a sporting event funded by public money. PIB Fact Check has since rejected these allegations as baseless.
