Priyanka Chaturvedi Flags “Judicial Overreach” Over NCERT Row
Priyanka Chaturvedi raises “judicial overreach” concern as Supreme Court bans Prof Michel Danino & 2 academics over NCERT Class 8 judicial corruption chapter.
In a Zero Hour intervention in the Rajya Sabha, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi raised concerns over what she called “judicial overreach” after the Supreme Court imposed a lifetime ban on three academics, including Prof Michel Danino. The ban bars them from any role in government-funded institutions, following their contribution to a Class 8 NCERT chapter on judicial corruption.
The Court ruled that the chapter could harm students’ perception of the judiciary and warned of action against social media users who circulated the content.
Responding to the controversy, NCERT and the Education Ministry issued unconditional apologies, withdrew the textbook, and promised stricter oversight of future curriculum content.
Chaturvedi’s intervention highlights the tension between academic freedom and judicial accountability, raising questions about the role of courts in regulating educational content. The debate has sparked wider discussions on freedom of expression in schools, social media responsibility, and judicial boundaries in matters of education.
