Supreme Court Directs Rajasthan to Introduce Rajasthani in All Schools
The Supreme Court directed the Rajasthan government to introduce Rajasthani as a subject in all schools, emphasizing mother tongue education under NEP 2020.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court has directed the Rajasthan government to take concrete and time-bound steps to introduce Rajasthani language as a subject in all government and private schools across the state. The court observed that promoting mother tongue-based education is in line with the constitutional vision and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
A bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta asked the state government to formulate a comprehensive policy granting appropriate recognition to Rajasthani as a local and regional language. The court also instructed the government to work towards introducing Rajasthani as a medium of instruction in primary classes in a phased manner, with gradual expansion to higher levels.
The Supreme Court expressed dissatisfaction with the Rajasthan government’s argument that only languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution are taught as additional languages in government schools. The bench described the stand as “highly technical” and an “evasive approach.”
The court noted that since Rajasthani is already being taught in universities across the state, it would be inappropriate to claim that the language lacks academic or institutional recognition. The bench further stated that the judiciary cannot remain a silent spectator when constitutional rights are being undermined.
The order came while hearing a petition seeking education through the Rajasthani language in schools and inclusion of Rajasthani in the syllabus of the Rajasthan Teacher Eligibility Examination (REET). The matter will next be heard in September, when the state government is expected to submit a compliance report.
