Advocate’s Legal Complaint Forces X to Act on Explicit Content
X has acted to curb sexually explicit content on its platform following a legal complaint filed by Advocate Vineet Jindal and intervention by MeitY.
In a significant development in the digital regulation space, social media platform X has reportedly taken action to ban sexually explicit content following sustained legal efforts by Advocate Vineet Jindal.
The move comes after a series of complaints and legal interventions initiated by Jindal against the platform for allegedly allowing the transmission of sexually explicit material.
Background of the Complaint
According to a public statement posted by Advocate Jindal on X, the matter dates back to 2024, when he filed a criminal complaint in court against the platform. The complaint alleged that X was permitting the circulation and transmission of sexually explicit content in violation of Indian laws.
Subsequently, in August 2025, a formal complaint was submitted to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting seeking regulatory intervention.
In September 2025, the Ministry reportedly forwarded the complaint to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) for appropriate action. Jindal stated that assurances were given that the matter would be examined and necessary steps taken.
Government’s Role in Digital Regulation
The involvement of MeitY is significant, as it is the nodal ministry responsible for implementing the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.
Under Indian law, intermediaries such as X are required to exercise due diligence to prevent the hosting, publishing, or transmission of unlawful content, including obscene and sexually explicit material. Failure to comply can potentially attract loss of safe harbour protection under Section 79 of the IT Act.
A Step Toward Digital Accountability?
Advocate Jindal described the development as an “important step toward greater accountability in the digital space” and thanked MeitY for taking action.
The broader debate, however, extends beyond this specific instance. Questions remain regarding:
- The scope and definition of “sexually explicit content”
- The balance between free speech and regulation
- Platform responsibility versus user-generated content
- Enforcement mechanisms under Indian digital law
Legal and Policy Implications
As India continues to tighten its digital governance framework, cases like this reflect the evolving relationship between private tech platforms and public regulatory authorities.
Further clarity from X and official confirmation from MeitY may shed more light on the exact nature of the action taken.
